the cool thing about being a wedding photographer for over 13 years is that my social media feeds get filled up with super cute babies as many of my couples go on to have families. allie and troy got married in the fall of 2016 at the inn at millrace pond. they had a fantastic day filled with love and laughter! knowing how much love they share for one another, i was super happy to see they were expecting a little girl late this winter.
as a challenge to myself, i wanted to photograph a newborn in their own home. despite the fact that i photograph weddings which involve tight timelines, tons of things/moments to capture, constantly changing and challenging lighting situations and a lot of personalities to juggle at once… i find myself intimidated by newborn sessions, hah. having had a newborn myself, it’s not their size or newness. for me, it’s more about the fact that i’m not one to pose and set up situations and the newborn photography market is very much about that. so while i have a distinct style with weddings, i’m still finding my voice with my newborn lifestyle sessions and who better to work with while i experiment with this genre than one of my very own couples.
super sweet kinnley…
baby feet!
hungry baby…
i just can’t with the cuteness!
while allie was nursing kinnley, troy reached out to touch kinnley’s tiny feet…
kinnley was very aware of me, i feel like we became fast friends! my daughter sees her on my computer and keeps saying what a cutie pie she is and asking if she can hold her. she’s only 2 1/2, but she promises she is very careful with babies…i know the world of newborn photography is filled with images of babies asleep and looking perfectly peaceful and i adore these images, but coming from the wedding world where i’m known for capturing raw emotion and gesture- i can’t help but embrace the many expressions babies and kids make. in a world of so much image sharing, there is a constant push to project perfection and happiness, but my job is to tell the story of now, all of it.
this image of kinnley caught my eye because it was the moment she stopped crying to listen to her parents singing to her. a perfect moment of a transition from crying to calm, that in-between moment we often overlook to obtain the image of perfection, but i love this moment of connection as allie and troy were able to sing together to bring kinnley to a place of calm. my eyes were welling up behind the camera because it was just so beautiful.
i love how kinnley keeps reaching for her mom’s hair. she loved holding on to it.
so much love for these three!
i love this shot of troy and kinnley looking at each other, but my favorite part of it is allie’s hand reaching in. this is such a mom thing. moms are forever reaching out to their children to wipe hair away, fix clothing and whatever else will make their child more comfortable and not a total and utter mess, hah. so while it might seem like this is a shot ot leave out, this is exactly the kind of shot i want to leave in because it’s these little gestures that tell so much of the story…
we love to remember the sleeping and happy faces of newborns, but i think it is important to remember their cry faces as well…
chillin’ with mom, loving the camera…
it was such an honor that allie and troy let me explore the world of newborn lifestyle sessions with their precious little daughter, kinnley. i loved being able to catch up with them, chat about life and parenting and meet the new love of their life. so happy for these three!
